Lucas Bols BV is the oldest Dutch company still active, and the oldest distillery brand in the world. The first distillery of the Bols family was established in 1575, secret recipes were tried out and bartenders mixed their cocktails with Bols genever. The production of genever came 100 years later. Today, Bols is still world-famous for its range of 33 liqueurs which you can get to know in House of Bols in Amsterdam.
Try out the two Bols cocktail recipes given here:
Orange Lemon Crush
- 1 shot of Bols Jonge Jenever
- 3/4 shot of Bols Triple Sec liqueur
- 3 orange vedges
- 3 lemon vedges
- 1 1/2 tablespoons of brown sugar
Muddle (crush to release oils and essence) the orange, lemon and sugar in a large short drink glass or in a long drink glass. Fill up the glass with crushed ice, add the Bols Jonge Jenever and stir well. Finish it off by sprinkling some crushed ice on top of the cocktail.
Double Dutch Cosmopolitan
- 1 1/4 shots of Hartevelt Citroenjenever (Lemon Genever)
- 3/4 shot of Bols Triple Sec Liqueur
- 1 1/2 shots of Terschellinger freshly squeezed unsweetened cranberry juice
Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a Martini cocktail glass. Garnish with a piece of orange peel.
The House of Blos in Amsterdam
In House of Bols you will learn about the history of Lucas Bols, whose motto was: No Bols, No Glory! The original recipe book from 1726 is, among other things, on display in the museum part. But House of Bols offers a lot more: Visit the The Hall of Taste for a surprising taste experiment. Did you know that as much as 95% of your taste is determined by what you smell? And that you also need your in order to taste? In the Hall of Taste you will therefore undergo a fun taste experiment by tasting, smelling and feeling. Taste with your eyes, hands and your nose. And for anyone who wants to know more about the art of bartending, there is the Flair Booth where you can practice your juggling skills.
When you have reached the end of your tour, finish it in style. In the Mirror bar the bartenders await you with a complimentary cocktail; professionally mixed with the flavour of your choice.

House of Bols, Lucas Bols Headquarters and the Bols Bartending Academy, are all based in the Paulus Potterstraat 14 – opposite the van Gogh Museum - in Amsterdam.
Centrally located and surrounded by many renowned museums a visit to House of Bols is highly recommended!
House of Bols is open from Monday through Sunday 12pm – 6pm (closed Tuesdays). Friday House of Bols is open from 12pm - 10pm.
